Religious Life Formation

The Knights’ formation follows postulancy, novitiate, temporary profession, and perpetual profession, with ongoing formation throughout life. Each stage gives a man time to learn the way of life and discern his vocation with the community.

• Postulancy: ordinarily nine months to one year. A candidate begins formation while he and the community discern his suitability.
• Novitiate: normally two years. Prayer, Scripture, Franciscan spirituality, and preparation for the vows receive particular attention.
• Temporary profession: vows are renewed annually during a period ordinarily lasting three to five years. Formation continues as a Knight takes greater responsibility in community life and service.
• Perpetual profession: a lifelong commitment, made with the community’s approval. Growth in prayer, virtue, and fidelity continues after this commitment.

These periods summarize the Knights’ statutes; approved adjustments may apply to an individual. Ask the vocation director about the path appropriate to your circumstances. The statutes describe the Knights’ vows as private vows recognized by the association. They are sacred commitments to poverty, chastity, and obedience.

Formation develops a man’s prayer, understanding of the faith, human maturity, and ability to live and serve with others. The Knights’ statutes include Scripture and theology, Franciscan spirituality, the evangelical counsels, Eucharistic adoration, spiritual direction, and participation in the apostolate.

This learning reaches into ordinary choices: listening when corrected, doing assigned work responsibly, making time for prayer, and treating others with patience. Study and community life help a man bring what he believes into what he does.

• Am I making room for daily prayer and a deeper sacramental life?
• Can I receive guidance honestly and ask for help when I need it?
• Am I growing in responsibility, self-discipline, and care for others?
• What do I still need to learn about this community and its commitments?

You can contact the Knights to ask about visiting before applying. A visit can help you learn about the community and discuss your questions with those responsible for vocations; arrangements should be made directly with the Knights.
