Why We Kneel: The Knight’s First Duty

The modern world values action. It asks, What did you get done today? What have you produced? Who did you influence?

But the Knight of the Holy Eucharist operates by a different standard. Before we act, before we serve. Before we speak, we kneel.

Standing Guard before the King

Our primary vocation is to stand watch before the Blessed Sacrament. This is not a passive “quiet time.” It is an active duty. Just as a sentry stands guard over his sovereign, the Knight stands guard before the Eucharistic King. In a world that has largely forgotten God, our kneeling is a visible sign that God is here.

As we learned in our recent community retreat, “If He is here, then we must stand here — at our post.” We are the soldiers of the altar. Our silence is not emptiness; it is attention.

Where the Battle is Won

We engage in many active works — serving the poor, training altar servers, and assisting at youth retreats. But we know a secret: the battle is won during the Holy Hour. If we lose the hour of adoration, we lose the day.

As St. John Vianney once said, “If we really understood the Mass, we would die of joy.” The Knight strives to live in that reality every day. When we kneel in adoration, we allow Christ to tend to our scrapes and wounds, help us to assess and direct our battle tactics, and restore our morale. Effectively, we are being “re-armed” with the grace necessary to face the spiritual challenges of our times.

A Counterpoint

Adoration is the counterpoint to a culture that says you are only valuable according to what you contribute to society. Rather than succumbing to the trend of frenetic distraction, we quiet ourselves before the True Presence and simply listen. Before we set our hands to work on creations which prove our productivity, we kneel before the Creator, asking Him to form us into who He desires us to be. Before we pour ourselves out to brothers and neighbors, we allow God to pour Himself into our hearts and fill us with His love.

A Counterweight against Self

Adoration is also the ultimate counterweight, offsetting the scales in the “cult of self” dominating our culture. By bending the knee, we submit to an Omniscient, Ever-Present, Almighty God, more perfect than we can ever hope to be. We place ourselves at the service of a loving and merciful God who willingly sacrificed for us so that we could be restored and reunited with Him. We humbly admit that we are not God. We declare that there is a King worthy of our total loyalty and all our love.
