A Much-Needed Prayer in Our Day

St. Michael the Archangel

How much the Church today needs the help and protection of St. Michael the Archangel! In an age marked by confusion, spiritual battles, and increasing opposition to the truth, we are reminded that our struggle is not merely earthly—but spiritual.

For many years, the traditional Prayer to St. Michael was prayed after Low Mass. Though this practice faded in many places, it is encouraging to see a renewed devotion emerging in parishes and among the faithful. This simple yet powerful prayer is a reminder that God has not left us defenseless. He has given us heavenly protectors, and among them, St. Michael stands as a mighty defender.

Saint Alphonsus Liguori offers a sobering and consoling reflection:
“The powers of hell will assail the dying Christian; but his angel guardian will come to console him. His patrons, and St. Michael, who has been appointed by God to defend his faithful servants in their last combat with the devils, will come to his aid.”

These words remind us that the spiritual battle is not only something we face at the end of life—it is already present in our daily lives. Temptation, discouragement, confusion, and sin are constant realities. Yet so too is the help of heaven.

St. Michael the Archangel is not merely a figure of devotion, but a real and powerful protector, entrusted by God with defending His people. Sacred Scripture presents him as the leader of the heavenly armies, the one who casts Satan down and stands in unwavering fidelity to God.

Because of this, the Church has always encouraged the faithful to call upon him—especially in times of trial. In our own day, when faith is often weakened and souls are in danger, this devotion is more important than ever.

Like many of the Church’s most treasured prayers, the Prayer to St. Michael is simple and easy to memorize. Yet its power lies not in complexity, but in faith. It is a prayer of humility, of trust, and of reliance on God’s strength rather than our own.

Let us make it a daily habit to invoke St. Michael’s protection—for ourselves, for our families, and for the Church throughout the world. In doing so, we unite ourselves to the ongoing spiritual battle, confident that victory belongs to God.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle—pray for us!
