All Saints’ Day Prayer

This All Saints’ Day Prayer asks the whole company of heaven to pray for us as we seek holiness. The Church’s traditional Collect for the feast of All Saints (November 1) comes first, followed by the traditional Litany of the Saints.

All Saints’ Day Prayer (Collect of the Solemnity)

O Almighty and eternal God, who hast granted us to venerate in one solemnity the merits of all Thy Saints, we beseech Thee to bestow upon us, through our many intercessors, that abundance of Thy mercy which we long for. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

When and How to Pray the All Saints’ Day Prayer

Pray the Collect on November 1 and through the following days, at family prayer or before the Rosary. The Litany of the Saints may be prayed alone, with family, or in a parish group, with one person leading and the others answering; the Church uses forms of this litany at the Easter Vigil, at baptisms and at ordinations. In private devotion, your patron saints and other favorite saints may be added in the appropriate place.

What Is All Saints’ Day?

All Saints’ Day is the solemnity on which the Church honors all the saints in heaven, including the countless holy men and women who were never formally canonized. It is celebrated on November 1 and is a holy day of obligation in the United States.

Why Do Catholics Ask the Saints to Pray for Us?

Catholics ask the saints for intercession because every Christian belongs to the one Body of Christ. Asking a saint to pray is like asking a faithful friend to pray, with confidence that those already with God remain united to us in charity (CCC 956).

Is All Saints’ Day the Same as All Souls’ Day?

No. All Saints’ Day honors those already in heaven; All Souls’ Day, November 2, is dedicated to praying for the faithful departed who are being purified. EWTN explains the distinction in its guide to All Souls’ Day. The Collect is from the Roman Missal; the litany follows EWTN’s traditional Litany of the Saints.
