When and How to Pray Before Surgery
Pray this before leaving home, while waiting at the hospital, or with a family member the evening before surgery. You may replace “myself” with your loved one’s name and adjust the other words accordingly. Follow your medical team’s directions about medicines, fasting, and preparation. If the operation is connected with serious illness, ask your parish priest beforehand about Confession, Holy Communion, and Anointing of the Sick.
What Is a Good Catholic Prayer Before Surgery?
A good prayer asks for healing, peace, and wise medical care while entrusting the outcome to God. You do not have to find perfect words. Name the operation and the people caring for you; ask Jesus to remain close when you feel afraid. A short prayer repeated quietly can be easier than reading a long text in a waiting room.
Can I Receive Anointing of the Sick Before Surgery?
A Catholic may receive Anointing before surgery when a serious illness is the reason for the operation (CCC 1515). It is not reserved for the final moments of life. Contact your priest early so he can advise you about your situation and arrange a visit. The USCCB’s explanation of Anointing of the Sick describes the sacrament’s place in the Church’s care for the sick.
How Can I Pray for Someone Having Surgery?
Pray for the patient, the medical team, and those waiting for news. Ask what practical help would be welcome, such as transport, a meal after discharge, or a brief call. Respect the person’s privacy and wishes. Prayer belongs alongside competent treatment and loving support; a difficult outcome does not mean that someone failed to pray well.
