When and How to Pray to Our Lady of Lourdes
Pray this when asking Mary’s intercession for health, conversion, or strength in a trial. To make a simple novena, pray it daily for nine days and add your intention. The feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is February 11; the traditional preparatory novena runs February 2–10. For a shorter prayer during the day, use the traditional invocation: “Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.”
What Happened at Lourdes?
In 1858, Bernadette Soubirous reported appearances of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Lourdes in France. The Church approved the apparitions, and Lourdes became a place of pilgrimage, prayer, and care for the sick. The devotion directs people toward Christ through prayer and repentance. EWTN’s short Lourdes novena is another established form of this devotion.
Can I Pray to Our Lady of Lourdes for Healing?
Yes, you may ask Mary to intercede for healing of body and soul. Healing is a gift from God and is not guaranteed by a pilgrimage, prayer, or use of Lourdes water. Continue medical care and ask for the grace to face your circumstances faithfully. The historical prayer above also asks for conversion and perseverance, keeping bodily needs within the whole Christian life.
How Do I Pray a Lourdes Novena at Home?
Set aside a few minutes each day for nine days, name your intention, and pray with attention. You do not need Lourdes water, a shrine visit, or a special image. You may add a decade of the Rosary or an act of charity for someone who is ill. When praying with children or a person who tires easily, the short invocation above may be enough.
