The Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus honors the love of Christ, whose Heart was pierced for us on the Cross (John 19:34). Each invocation names something about that Heart, and after each one we ask, “have mercy on us.” Pope Leo XIII approved the litany for public use in 1899.
Begin with the opening petitions, then answer each invocation with “have mercy on us.” The litany closes with the Lamb of God, a short verse and response, and the concluding prayer. It takes about ten minutes. Pray it slowly; it can help to stay a moment with one title that speaks to you that day.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart grew through the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque at Paray-le-Monial, France, between 1673 and 1675. Pope Leo XIII approved this litany for public use in 1899, the same year he consecrated the human race to the Sacred Heart in his encyclical Annum Sacrum. In 2024 Pope Francis wrote about the Sacred Heart in his encyclical Dilexit Nos.
