The Lord Is Our Shield and Our Strength

Sacred Scripture repeatedly returns to one unshakable truth: Those who trust in the Lord are never abandoned.

God Is My Strength and Shield in the Psalms

The Psalms proclaim God as shield and strength — not because life is free of hardship, but because His protection sustains the faithful through every trial.

One Examples of such proclamations are found in Psalm 18, which states: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold” (Psalm 18:1–2). This passage shows God’s steadfast protection against adversities.

Another Psalm says: “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped” (Psalm 28:7). This verse highlights God’s assistance for those who lay their troubles at his feet.

Finally, Psalm 46:1 declares: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” This verse reassures God’s people that, like a good Father, our Lord will support us in our times of need.

Trust in the Lord: Bearing Fruit in Times of Trial

Trust in the Lord does not eliminate suffering; it anchors the heart so that it does not collapse under its weight.

The prophet Jeremiah offers a striking image: the one who trusts in the Lord is like a tree planted near water. Heat will come. Drought will come. But the roots run deep, and life continues to bear fruit (see Jeremiah 17: 7–8).

St. Paul reminds us that God’s provision is not measured by worldly abundance, but by His riches in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). When we place our trust in Him, our needs are met in ways that often surpass our expectations. Then indeed can we sing the verse that immediately follows: “To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen.”

Let us cling to the Lord as our shield, our strength, and our song of thanksgiving.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.–Phil. 4:19

What Does It Mean That God Is My Shield?

To say that God is my shield means that He stands between me and whatever threatens my soul. A shield does not always remove the battle, but it protects the one who carries it. When we trust in the Lord, His grace guards our hearts from despair, fear, and discouragement. Even in hardship, we remain secure because our protection rests not in our strength, but in His faithfulness.
