When and How to Pray to St. Apollonia
Pray before a dental appointment, while waiting for treatment, or for someone frightened by tooth pain. St. Apollonia’s feast is February 9; a nine-day preparation may begin January 31. You can repeat the prayer each day and add an Our Father. Prayer accompanies dental care; follow the guidance of the professionals caring for you.
Why Is St. Apollonia the Patron Saint of Dentists?
Her patronage is connected with the suffering of her martyrdom: her persecutors struck her mouth and broke her teeth. The Catholic Encyclopedia at New Advent records the early account of her death in Alexandria in 249. Devotion to her became associated with toothache and dental care.
Can I Pray to St. Apollonia Before Dental Surgery?
Yes. Ask for calm, good treatment and the strength to cooperate with the people caring for you. Tell the dentist if you are anxious, and follow the instructions you receive. You can also pray for the dentist, assistants and other patients.
Does This Prayer Promise to Cure a Toothache?
No particular cure is promised. We ask God for healing and entrust the outcome to Him while taking reasonable care of our health (CCC 2288). Prayer can help you face treatment with hope; it should never be used to delay needed care.
