Who Was St. Padre Pio?
According to the official Padre Pio biography, during periods of his ministry he spent as many as sixteen hours a day hearing confessions.
St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina was born Francesco Forgione on May 25, 1887, in Pietrelcina, Italy. While still a teenager, he entered the Capuchin Franciscan Order and received the religious name Pio. He was ordained a priest on August 10, 1910.
In 1916, Padre Pio was sent to the Capuchin friary at San Giovanni Rotondo, where he would remain for the rest of his life.
Two years later, on September 20, 1918, Padre Pio received the visible stigmata—the wounds associated with the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. For decades afterward, the wounds and Padre Pio himself became the subject of intense attention, including medical examinations.
Yet the center of Padre Pio’s life was not the extraordinary phenomena associated with him. It was Jesus Christ.
The Holy Eucharist, prayer, sacrifice, spiritual direction, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation formed the heart of his priestly ministry. Enormous numbers of pilgrims traveled to San Giovanni Rotondo to attend his Mass, seek his counsel, and go to Confession.
Padre Pio died on September 23, 1968, at the age of eighty-one. Pope St. John Paul II beatified him in 1999 and canonized him on June 16, 2002. The Church celebrates the feast of St. Pio of Pietrelcina on September 23.
