Our Popes in Times of War

April 11, 2014

Our popes have always been in the middle of war; the great war that wages in the heavens and spills into our streets. That is what a good father does for his family, he places himself in the breach, between you and the enemy. Remember to pray for your “daddy” on the front line.

Here Pope Pius XII greets a large crowd at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, 1944.

Smoke rises from explosions and the bombardment in Rome. The scene is marked by destroyed buildings and ruins in the streets. A large crowd had gathered at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. Pope Pius XII arrives and is quickly surrounded by the crowd. Policemen keep a vigil. Motorists and cyclists rush through the streets. A church bell tolls. The Pope greets the waiting crowd from his balcony and the crowd cheers.

Prayer for Pope Francis

Lord, source of eternal life and truth, give to Your shepherd, the Pope, a spirit of courage and right judgement, a spirit of knowledge and love.

By governing with fidelity those entrusted to his care may he, as successor to the apostle Peter and vicar of Christ, build Your church into a sacrament of unity, love, and peace for all the world.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
