Prayer to St. Gabriel the Archangel

A prayer to St. Gabriel the Archangel asks the messenger of the Annunciation to intercede for us as we welcome Christ and seek God’s will. Bring him your need and ask for faith and courage.

Prayer to St. Gabriel the Archangel

O blessed Archangel Gabriel, we beseech thee, do thou intercede for us at the throne of Divine Mercy in our present necessities, that as thou didst announce to Mary the mystery of the Incarnation, so through thy prayers and patronage in heaven we may obtain the benefits of the same, and sing the praise of God forever in the land of the living. Amen.

When and How to Pray to St. Gabriel

Pray this prayer before a difficult conversation, when discerning a decision, or when you want to respond more faithfully to God. Name your intention quietly before beginning. Gabriel shares the feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel and Raphael on September 29 in the current Roman calendar. If you wish, repeat the prayer for nine consecutive days as a private novena, without treating the number of days as a guarantee.

Who Is St. Gabriel the Archangel?

Gabriel is the angel who announced to Mary that she would become the mother of Jesus (Luke 1:26–38). He also announced John the Baptist’s birth to Zechariah and explained visions to Daniel. EWTN’s account of the archangels describes these biblical missions.

What Do Catholics Ask St. Gabriel to Pray For?

Catholics ask Gabriel’s intercession for faith, discernment and the courage to share good news truthfully. Because he is God’s messenger, he is associated with communications. Before sending a message that could hurt someone, ask for words that are both honest and charitable. The grace comes from God; Gabriel intercedes.

Is St. Gabriel the Angel Who Comforted Jesus in Gethsemane?

The Gospel does not name the angel who strengthened Jesus in Gethsemane (Luke 22:43). We should not identify that angel as Gabriel as though Scripture said so. Gabriel’s clearly identified mission at the Annunciation provides a firm foundation for this devotion.
