How often do we turn to Our Lady in our daily lives?
The Church, in her wisdom, gives us many beautiful ways to call upon the Blessed Virgin Mary—and among them, the litanies hold a special place.
A litany is a form of prayer made up of short invocations followed by a repeated response, such as:
“Holy Mary, Mother of God / pray for us.”
At first glance, this repetition can seem unnecessary. But in reality, it is deeply biblical and profoundly human. Even Psalm 136 repeats the line: “for his steadfast love endures forever.” The repetition is not meaningless—it is a way of entering more deeply into prayer.
Repetition becomes powerful when it is filled with attention and love.
The challenge is not the repetition itself, but praying with intention—avoiding the temptation to rush through the words mindlessly. When we slow down and pray with the heart, each invocation becomes a moment of encounter.
Among the Church’s Marian prayers, the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also known as the Litany of Loreto, is perhaps the most beloved. It is rich with beautiful titles of Our Lady, each one revealing something of her role in God’s plan and her closeness to us.
She is:
- Mother most pure
- Seat of wisdom
- Cause of our joy
- Queen of Virgins
Each title is like a doorway, inviting us to reflect more deeply on who she is—and how she desires to lead us closer to her Son.
When we pray the Litany of Loreto, we are not simply repeating words. We are placing ourselves under her care. We are asking for her intercession in every aspect of our lives—our struggles, our decisions, our spiritual growth.
And we can be confident in her help.
A loving mother does not ignore the voice of her children.
Today, take a few moments to slow down and pray this beautiful litany. Let each title speak to your heart. Allow the rhythm of the prayer to draw you into a deeper spirit of recollection and trust.
Call upon Our Lady.
Entrust your needs to her.
Let her lead you to Jesus.
Our Lady, Queen of Virgins—pray for us!
With this lovely litany, call upon Our Lady for her powerful intercession in your life!
